Tough Love.

Is it right to detain a drug addict against his will?  Would you want a van full of men to come and grab a friend or family member and take them to a forceful rehab center?  I think most people would want this if someone they truly loved were facing an addiction that was spiraling out of control.  I agree with this video in many different ways.

I do wish the state had the right to intervene sometimes in people's lives.  I know that I may have been on the path to recovery a lot quicker had something like this taken place for me.  If an addict isn't causing any real harm or threat to himself or others what can be done?

No addict is going to want to go to rehab in general.  Telling an addict that he/she has to now go away from the drugs that are filling in deep gaps between fissures in their personality is dreadful and gloomy news.  I remember hating ever thinking that I was more than an arms length from a pile and drugs and alcohol at any time.

Like the video says (I love Dr. Drew, he is the real deal), most addicts do end up getting arrested by the state.  They get locked up in prison, become forced to remain sober, and their treatment can at least begin a treatment programTrust me however, you don't want to go to prison to have to start drug treatment (especially if you're going to be sick from withdraws).

It never came to this point in my life.  I got help voluntarily after just getting fed up with the whole addiction cycle.  I definitely would have wanted this though at particular stages in my addiction (in hindsight);  it would have saved me a lot of time and a lot of sadness.  I'm still struggling to fill voids in my life caused by drugs but I am very glad to be on the road to (hopefully) successful long-term recovery.

Would you detain a love one and send them to a rehab where they were chained down?  Would you want the state to intervene for addicts?  Leave me some comments if you can, I'd like to see how others feel about this.

  1. Some people don't want help, and forcing it on them can be dangerous. Another interesting read.

  2. Agreed with GameKingCentral. Sometimes it better to just let someone deal with their addiction and realise what its doing.

  3. One cannot force change, change has to be willed.

  4. Sometimes an intervention is necessary, but a person isn't going to change unless he truly wants to.

  5. To me it depends on how bad the addiction has gotten. Are they selling all that they have for their addiction? there is so many different variables i see that could influence a decision. But i would rather detain the person using family then have them get sent by the state. just my couple of cents

  7. I would say chaining down people is a lot easier for their recovery .

Because addiction is another chain . You can only break another chain with power .

  8. I think that the state should provide rehab instead of incarceration for drug addicts. However, just snatching someone off the streets and placing them in rehab probably won't work. It's still a better idea than doing nothing, though.

  9. Im not sure if the state should have the right to force treatment. I agree people do need help but this could potentially be a large constitutional debate.

  11. You have to WANT to change, rather than being forced upon. Followed!

  12. I think they should have their own choice and we shouldnt regulate it. I dont care if the guy next door ods. not my problem.

  13. It's possible to get better drugs in rehab than out of it.. rehab isn't always the solution.

  14. If they are about to die and you know they don't want to then I think it would be a good idea.

  15. It all depends on the situation, obviously the situation would never be the same for different people. But most of the time id say tough love works!

  19. I don't think it would be right to allow the state that much power. Unless the immediate family had proof of the addiction and consented to their being taken away, and the individual had at least a little bit of say in it, that would be giving too much power to the government. I fear that they would expand to other situations and abuse the power.

  20. NO! This is so wrong. The State should have NO right to "kidnap" anyone, under any circumstances.

    Has anyone ever read 1984!?

If the family and friends would like to intervene, that should be their own PRIVATE decision.

    This is soo wrong.

Where will they draw the line? Are they gonna spoon feed us now, "for our own good"?

    Makes me sick.

  21. I dont think so. I think that keeping somebody against the will of that person could actually have adverse affects. Your just reminding them of the addiction they have.

  22. I think that throwing addicts in prison is obviously wrong as they need different medical care but the State should be out of any "I think this is better for you" stuff.
If you were a danger for society they'd have all rights but everyone should be free to do whatever they want with their life, even drugs.

  23. Other end of the stick here. It's all well and good to say you don't like the idea, but as George Carlin said, "NIMBY!"

    Not In My Back Yard!

At least I think that was it. Point being, when there is a drug addict on your lawn and you don't have a right to threaten them with a gun, and your only other option is to call the police on them...well, it could be a family member.

I swear I felt emphatically about my point but got distracted by playing Devil's Advocate.

  25. if it wasn't against the law, i think it is better for me to detain a loved one than to toss them into prison :/
